Biography

Fatima Pereira is a Lecturer and Principal Investigator at the University of Southampton's School of Biological Sciences, specializing in microbiology and the gut microbiome. Her research focuses on the interactions between gut microbiota and hosts, understanding how these relationships influence health and disease. Pereira employs a range of molecular biology and genomics techniques to study how various factors, including non-antibiotic medications, affect the gut microbiome. She is particularly interested in the impact of host-secreted RNA molecules on microbiome composition and their implication in conditions like Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In addition to her research, she teaches several modules related to microbiology and pharmacology and supervises BSc and MSc projects in molecular microbiology and microbial ecology. Fatima holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from NOVA University of Lisbon and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
