Dr. Federica Bianchi

Biography

Federica Bianchi is a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute of Computing, where she works on the Swiss National Science Foundation project "The Dynamics of Innovation: Latent Space Modelling of Patent Citations." Federica obtained her PhD in Economics from USI in 2019, with a thesis focused on social mechanisms in financial markets. Following her PhD, she held an Early Postdoc.Mobility position at the University of Glasgow within the School of Social and Political Sciences, where she developed her own project titled "Financial Markets Evolving Relational Systems." At USI, she previously earned an MSc in Economics from the University of Pavia. Federica has extensive experience teaching quantitative methods in social sciences and her main research interests include social networks and their roles in coordinating economic activity within markets. Her work provides analytical and methodological tools useful in understanding the networks of observed exchange events that unfold in continuous time. Her empirical research highlights that the micro-relational structure of markets ultimately leads to self-organizing properties of individual transactions, linking changing sets of buyers and sellers. Currently, her research focuses on the dynamics of innovation through the analysis of patent citations, aiming to develop a novel conceptual framework for understanding how patents evolve over time and invite citations from nearby patents.
