Biography

Federico Ciardo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Northwestern Engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanics from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, as well as a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering and Civil Engineering, respectively, from the University of Bologna in Italy. His research interests revolve around understanding the behavior of brittle rocks and geomaterials under various loading conditions, particularly at the reservoir scale. Ciardo's research group combines advanced numerical and theoretical models to investigate in-situ external forces and fluid injection depth, aiming to induce inelastic deformation instabilities that can lead to dynamic rupture events. The overarching goal of his work is to improve predictive models of subsurface behavior and to facilitate geo-engineering operations, such as deep-geothermal energy extraction and CO2 sequestration. Ciardo has been recognized for his academic contributions with a distinction award for his doctoral thesis in the EPFL Doctoral Program (2020).
