Biography

Feisal Mohamed is a Professor of English at Yale University and the Director of Undergraduate Studies. His research and teaching focus primarily on seventeenth-century English literature, with particular emphasis on the works of John Milton. He is the author of 'Sovereignty: Seventeenth-Century England and the Making of the Modern Political Imaginary' (Oxford, 2020), which discusses the emergence of modern ideas of sovereign power in the writings of Thomas Hobbes, John Milton, and Andrew Marvell, and critiques the thought of Carl Schmitt. Mohamed's current projects extend his inquiries into sovereignty and legitimacy, particularly in relation to England's evolving international role during the seventeenth century, and he is developing a theory of tyrannicide that explores resistance to tyranny. He has served as the past president of the Milton Society of America and has received support from the Mellon Foundation through the New Directions Fellowship. His scholarly work includes editing and co-editing volumes on Milton, and publishing articles in various prestigious venues such as the American Scholar, Chronicle Review, and New Republic. In addition to his research, he is also noted for his editorial work with Northwestern University Press.
