Biography

Felicia Chan is a scholar in the field of Transnational Film Cultures at the University of Manchester. Her academic journey began with a PhD from the University of Nottingham, where she focused on Comparative Poetics and Cultural Translatability in Transnational Chinese Cinemas. Since joining the University of Manchester in 2008, she has been actively involved in the Research Institute of Cosmopolitan Cultures. Her research interests encompass film cultural historiography, highlighting the socio-economic conditions that influence cultural production, reception, and exhibition. A particular focus of her work is on marginalized texts and practices, as well as the politics of knowledge production. Chan's geographical research spans East and Southeast Asia, while she also investigates the socio-economic histories of cinemagoing and the architectural geographies of cinema spaces. As a prominent member of the Chinese Film Forum UK, she has contributed significantly to broadening research on Chinese cinemas and enhancing public engagement through film screenings and academic symposia. Chan's contributions provide vital insights into the interplay between culture and socio-economic factors, and she remains engaged in international collaborations and community initiatives.
