Biography

Felicity Loughlin is a lecturer in the History of Modern Christianity at the University of Edinburgh. She has a background in history and classics and holds a Master's degree in Theology and History, as well as a PhD in History from the same institution. Her research primarily focuses on modern Christianity, with a particular emphasis on Scottish, British, and European contexts. Loughlin's work spans the eighteenth to twentieth centuries and is underpinned by an interest in the role of religion in shaping understandings of self and society. She has explored Christian encounters with non-Christian faiths, the intersections of religious debate and scholarship, and Christian responses to cultural and intellectual change. Loughlin has been awarded a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship, investigating the landscape of unbelief in Scotland from approximately 1697 to 1914. She has previously worked as a Research Fellow at the University of St Andrews and has contributed to the Scottish Church History Society as treasurer. Her research is notable for its engagement with the emotional and intellectual history of Scotland’s unbelievers and the broader implications of religious controversy during the Scottish Enlightenment.
