Biography

Felix J. Herrmann is a Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar in Energy at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he holds appointments in the Schools of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Computational Science and Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is a distinguished lecturer for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) since 2019. Herrmann obtained both his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Engineering Physics from Delft University of Technology and completed postdoctoral studies at Stanford University and MIT, before becoming a professor at the University of British Columbia's Department of Earth, Ocean, Atmosphere Sciences. His career has focused on the development of next-generation industrial acquisition and computational imaging technologies aimed at improving image quality in complex geological areas while significantly reducing costs and environmental impacts. At the University of British Columbia, Herrmann founded and directed the Seismic Laboratory for Imaging Modelling (SLIM) and hosted the industry Consortium SINBAD. He has contributed to making SLIM a world leader in integrating transformative scientific developments in areas such as compressive sensing, randomized linear algebra, and machine learning. His research interests encompass imaging modalities and innovative approaches to tackle challenging imaging problems. He has served on the editorial board of Geophysical Prospecting and is a participant in the SEG Research Committee.
