Biography

Fenghua Hu is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at Cornell University, where he is also a member of the Weill Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Peking University in 1997 and earned his Ph.D. from Baylor College of Medicine in 2002. Following his doctorate, Hu completed postdoctoral training at Yale University. His research primarily focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in neurodegeneration, particularly concerning Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD). The Hu lab employs a combination of biochemical and cell biological approaches, alongside mouse models, to elucidate the cellular and physiological functions of ALS/FTLD-related genes such as granulin, TMEM106B, C9orf72, and TDP-43. The lab's findings have revealed intriguing connections between lysosomal dysfunction and neurodegeneration, with the aim of facilitating therapeutic developments for these devastating diseases.
