Biography

Filipe R. Campante is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at Johns Hopkins University (SAIS Carey Business School). His research interests focus on political economy, development economics, and urban/regional issues. He examines the constraints that politicians and policymakers face, particularly through the lens of institutions, media, cultural norms, and political protest. His work is particularly focused on the informal constraints that affect the spatial distribution of people and economic activity, access to information, the evolution of cultural norms, and the structure of the economy. His research employs an applied microeconomic approach to tackle aggregate questions affecting countries, states, and cities. Campante has contributed to leading academic journals including the American Economic Review and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. His insights have been featured in prominent media outlets such as The New York Times, NPR, The Washington Post, The Economist, and Foreign Affairs. Before joining Johns Hopkins, he was an Assistant and Associate Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University from 2007 to 2018. Campante holds a PhD from Harvard University, an MA from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, and a BA from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, all in economics.
