Biography

Filipe Ferreira currently serves as a Principal Research Fellow and UKRI Future Leaders Fellow in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at University College London. He leads a research team focused on optical fibre communications and photonic systems. His work has garnered significant funding, including £1.8 million over seven years, aimed at developing new technologies to expand Internet capacity. The research focuses on exploiting massive spatial parallelism in optical fibres, merging spatial light modulation with intelligent signal processing to enhance the capacity and energy efficiency of communication systems. Filipe has extensive experience in both academia and industry, notably with Nokia Siemens Networks and Aston University, where he contributed to pioneering advancements in mode-division multiplexing and spatially multiplexed transmission systems. Additionally, he holds distinguished roles as the Chair of the IEEE UK & Ireland Photonics Society Chapter and Vice-Chair of the IEEE Standards Association Working Group on the Massive MIMO Architectural Framework. He has authored and co-authored 170 international peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and has delivered 30 invited talks at international conferences and industrial workshops. As a lead inventor, he holds 6 active World Organization patents. His research interests include high-capacity optical fibre transmission, spatially multiplexed systems, digital nonlinear compensation, and optical fibre design, with a commitment to translating cutting-edge research into impactful technologies to advance sustainable data communications and facilitate the next generation of optical systems incorporating AI.
