Dr. Fiona Alderdice

Biography

Fiona Alderdice is a Professor of Perinatal Health Wellbeing at the University of Oxford's Medical Sciences Division and a Senior Social Scientist at the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU). Her research focuses on assessing maternal and infant experiences through developing population surveys that benchmark perinatal health and wellbeing both nationally and internationally. She is dedicated to developing interventions aimed at promoting psychological wellbeing during the perinatal period and conducting follow-up studies on vulnerable infants, including those who are preterm or growth restricted. Fiona's academic journey began with an undergraduate degree followed by a PhD in Psychology from Queen's University Belfast. Her research interests in maternal and child health date back to 1992 when she worked as a research fellow at NPEU. In 1998, she was awarded the MRC HSR training fellowship, which supported her work on complex pregnancies. She joined the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Queen's University Belfast in 2002 and has held a prominent position as a Chair in Perinatal Health Wellbeing since 2010. She joined the NPEU in January 2017 and has been recognized as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a long-standing Cochrane reviewer.
