Fiona graduated with a BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Glasgow in 1989. She joined Arup as a Structural/Civil Engineer, working on a wide variety of Civil Engineering projects in the UK and overseas, including positions in Glasgow, Aberdeen, Manchester, and Sydney. In 1996, she became a Chartered Civil Engineer (CEng MICE). After a thirteen-year career at Arup, she left to become a Lecturer at the University of Strathclyde in 2002. Fiona served as Course Director for the Building Design Engineering Undergraduate Programme from 2004 to 2010, which is a multi-disciplinary, triple-accredited MEng and MArch course for Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Architecture students. From 2010 to 2015, she was the Director of Architectural Technology. In 2015, she joined the University of Glasgow as a Senior Lecturer in Structural Design and was appointed Deputy Head of Civil Engineering in August 2016, later becoming Head of the Civil Engineering Discipline in January 2017. She was appointed Professor of Structural Engineering Design in August 2020 and became the Deputy Convenor for Learning and Teaching in the James Watt School of Engineering in 2022.
