Biography

Fiona Woollard is a philosopher at the University of Southampton, where she has been a faculty member since September 2010. She earned her PhD from the University of Reading in 2008 and subsequently held a temporary lectureship at the University of Sheffield. She has also been a Non-Residential Fellow at the Philosophy Transformative Experience Project and a Mind Association Early Career Fellow. Woollard has engaged in various research initiatives, including the BUMP project, which aimed to enhance understanding of the metaphysics of pregnancy. Her main research interests lie in normative ethics and applied ethics, particularly in the contexts of pregnancy, birth, motherhood, and parenthood. She actively explores how philosophical misconceptions regarding motherhood can influence societal treatment of pregnant individuals and mothers. Beyond her academic research, she contributes to public understanding through collaborations, such as creating informative content for the NCT Breastfeeding Network. Fiona's work includes teaching ethical philosophy within undergraduate programs and supervising MA and PhD students on topics related to ethics and pregnancy.
