Biography

Firoozeh Kashani-Sabet is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on the modern Middle East, particularly Iran and its borderlands. She received her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and subsequently earned her M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in history from Yale University. Her prominent works include 'Frontier Fictions: Shaping Iranian Nation, 1804-1946', which discusses the significance of land border disputes in Iran's national identity and cultural production, and 'Conceiving Citizens: Women, Politics, and Motherhood in Iran', which garnered the 2012 book award from the Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies. Kashani-Sabet has also contributed significantly to the study of health, disease, and social history in relation to Iran and the United States. She directed the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania from 2006 to 2019, successfully receiving funding for language programs and launching an undergraduate program in Modern Middle Eastern Studies. Her research interests span topics including frontier history, race, ethnicity, women's history, nationalism, and social history. She has published extensively and is known for her scholarly articles and books examining the intersections of politics, culture, and identity in the modern Iranian context.
