Generate a tailored SOP for Dr. Flavia Teles. Improve your application with a focused, well-structured draft.
Dr. Teles’ research interests include the study of oral microbiome health, disease initiation, progression, response to periodontal treatment, and implant placement, with a focus on investigating microbial ecology within the oral cavity. Over the past ten years, her research has been supported by grants from NIH/NIDCR and various industry foundations. Dr. Teles’ primary research line is dedicated to the identification and cultivation of new periodontal pathogens using state-of-the-art cultivation and molecular approaches. With a significant portion of the oral microbiome remaining unrecognized, understanding its role in periodontal health and disease is a key part of her work. Additionally, her laboratory has developed in vitro and ex vivo biofilm models to foster cultivation of difficult-to-grow microorganisms and to test new antimicrobials and therapeutic mechanisms. Dr. Teles is exploring the association between oral microbiome and carcinogenesis, notably in the context of head and neck cancers and in patients suffering from Fanconi Anemia, a genetic disorder characterized by heightened oral cancer predisposition. By utilizing high-throughput sequencing technologies and bioinformatics tools, Dr. Teles aims to enhance the understanding of oral health dynamics and develop affordable therapeutic strategies for the prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases and oral conditions.
