Flora Charner is an award-winning multimedia journalist with 20 years of experience covering national and international news across various broadcast, digital, and print publications. She joined the journalism faculty at Texas A&M University in August 2024 after a decade with CNN, where she served as the Director of Coverage for the International Newsgathering unit based at the network’s Atlanta headquarters. Professor Charner is part of the team honored with an Emmy Award for Outstanding Breaking News Coverage of the Israel-Hamas War and has received several prestigious accolades, including an Emmy, a duPont-Columbia Award, and the Overseas Press Club Award for CNN’s coverage of significant global events such as Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and Turkey’s incursion into Syria in 2019. Her career began as a field producer for CNN in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she reported on various stories from Latin America and the Caribbean, including the 2016 Summer Olympics, the Zika outbreak, and the impeachment process of President Dilma Rousseff. Prior to joining CNN, Professor Charner held writing and producing roles at the Associated Press and Al Jazeera English, as well as contributing to America’s Quarterly. She holds an MA in Politics from Columbia University’s Journalism School, graduating cum laude from Emerson College with a BS in Broadcast Journalism. An active member and faculty advisor for the inaugural Texas A&M student chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), she is also part of the 2024 Adelante Latina Leadership Academy cohort. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, she is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
