Biography

Flora Lysen is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Maastricht University and a member of the Maastricht University Science, Technology, Society research group (MUSTS). Her academic work combines historical science and technology studies methods to study the impact of new media technologies on cognitive science, behavioral science, and medicine since the mid-20th century. Lysen's monograph, "Brainmedia: A Hundred Years of Performing Live Brains, 1920-2020," published by Bloomsbury Academic Press in 2022, examines how scientists, science educators, and artists have used new media to conceptualize, explore, and demonstrate brain work. Her current research projects focus on the history of artificial intelligence in clinical decision-making as part of the NWO-funded project "RAIDIO" (2020-2024) and the practices of data ethics and data governance in new healthcare infrastructures as part of the EU-funded project "STRONG-AYA" (2022-2027). Previously, she was an affiliated researcher at the Zentrum für Interdisziplinäre Frauen- und Geschlechterforschung at TU Berlin and co-initiated the interdisciplinary "Neurocultures" research group at the University of Amsterdam. Lysen defended her PhD dissertation at the University of Amsterdam in 2020, winning the ASCA Dissertation Award. She has also been a visiting fellow at Harvard University's Visual Environmental Studies department and has coordinated programs that facilitate exchanges between artists and scientists. Lysen advocates for diverse forms of art-science exchange within her university and serves on the steering committee for the Maastricht University Experimental Research Arts Network (MERIAN).
