Biography

Florent Masse is a Professor of Practice in the Department of French and Italian and the Director of L’Avant-Scène, a French theater workshop at Princeton University. He earned his master's degree in American Literature and Civilization from the University of Lille where he trained as an actor and director. Masse has a notable background in theater studies, having been a Levy-Despas Fellow and teaching assistant in the Department of French at Amherst College during 1999-2001. He has directed numerous full-length productions, showcasing celebrated plays from the French theatrical canon, including works by Feydeau, Molière, Racine, and Corneille. In addition to his teaching and directing, he has initiated programs that enrich students' experiences abroad by inviting prominent French theater artists to Princeton. In recognition of his contributions to French culture, Masse was named Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture in January 2017. Current projects include directing adaptations of works like 'Mon pays de terre rouge' and 'Britannicus'.
