Dr. Florentina Bunea

Biography

Florentina Bunea is a Professor in the Department of Statistics and Data Science at Cornell Bowers University. Her research is broadly centered on statistical machine learning theory and high-dimensional statistical inference. She focuses on developing new methodologies accompanied by sharp theory to solve a variety of problems in the rapidly growing field of data science, particularly in artificial intelligence. Her research interests include mixture modeling, latent space estimation, and sparsity dimension reduction in high dimensions, as well as statistical optimal transport and their applications in large language models and immunology. Some specific research foci include latent space modeling for discovery and inference, structure adaptive estimation of high-dimensional models, and estimation inference in discrete statistical optimal transport. Bunea has been recognized with the IMS Medallion Award and is a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. She serves as an associate editor for several influential journals and is actively involved in promoting diversity in the workforce of data science disciplines.
