Dr. Florian Schmidt

Biography

Florian Schmidt is a Professor of Applied Physics at Umeå University, specializing in laser spectroscopy and related applications in combustion science, medical diagnostics, and chemical imaging. He serves as the Assistant Head of the Department and the Director of Doctoral Studies, contributing significantly to the education and research landscape. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Schmidt has published numerous research findings and developed innovative optical techniques for real-time situ measurements at the atomic level. His work has significant implications for energy technology and non-invasive medical diagnostics. He leads the Applied Optics Group, focusing on high-speed imaging and the development of sensitive spectroscopic techniques to study gaseous, liquid, and solid samples. Currently, his research includes understanding the role of gasotransmitter molecules in respiratory diseases and advancing methods in chemical imaging using quantum cascade lasers. Dr. Schmidt has a robust educational background with a BSc and MSc in Physics from TU Vienna and Umeå University, respectively, along with a PhD from Umeå University. He has also held postdoctoral research positions at the University of Helsinki.
