Professor Dr. Florian Shkurti

Biography

Florian Shkurti is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Toronto Mississauga. His research spans several core aspects of robotics, including Machine Learning, perception, planning, and control. He is particularly focused on developing methods and systems that enable robots to perceive, reason, and act effectively and safely in dynamic environments alongside humans. His work also includes enhancing the specification of desired robot behaviors, requiring effective coding practices to guide robot learning processes. Shkurti aims to provide safety guarantees throughout the robot learning and deployment stages. His application areas extend to manipulation in laboratory automation settings within chemistry and biology, as well as field robotics for environmental monitoring. Shkurti actively investigates topics like shared autonomy, safety guarantees in robot learning, active perception, 3D environment mapping, and multi-robot coordination. He is involved in collaborations with various research centers, contributing to advancements in robotics and machine learning domains.
