Biography

Floris Bex is a professor of Responsible Artificial Intelligence at Utrecht University, working in both the Department of Information and Computing Sciences and the School of Law. His research focuses on how people reason, particularly in the context of law, and how reasoning can be captured in formal models that are supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. He is involved in argumentation theory in AI and AI & Law, and holds a full professorship at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) at Tilburg University. As the scientific director of the National Police Lab AI, he collaborates with the Dutch National Police and other universities to develop state-of-the-art AI techniques that improve safety in a socially, legally, and ethically responsible manner. His lab in Utrecht concentrates on reasoning through legal arguments and the integration of symbolic and subsymbolic techniques in AI. Bex is also actively engaged in projects such as ALGOPOL, which investigates the responsible use of AI by law enforcement, emphasizing the need for transparency in automated systems that assess crime reports.
