Biography

Prof. Bornemann conducts research in numerical analysis and multiscale problems, focusing on the interplay between efficient algorithms and a foundational mathematical understanding of the problems. His work involves methods and algorithms applied in medical technology, natural sciences, and digital image processing. He studied mathematics at Freie Universität Berlin and completed his doctorate in 1991. He worked at the Konrad-Zuse-Zentrum (ZIB) as a research fellow initially and later as the scientific head of the 'Numerics Modeling' department. From 1996 to 1997, he was a visiting scientist at New York University. In 1998, he was appointed the Chair of Scientific Computing at TUM. Prof. Bornemann was a board member of the German Mathematical Society from 2001 to 2004, served on the Mathematics Review Board of the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 2008 to 2011, and was appointed to the DFG selection board for Collaborative Research Centers from 2012 to 2018. He has held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics from 2018 to 2022 and was appointed to the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat) in 2024.
