Biography

Fons van der Sommen is an associate professor in the research group Video Coding & Architectures at the Department of Electrical Engineering. He is a passionate scientist and educator, holding an MSc in Electrical Engineering (2012, cum laude) and a PhD in Computer Vision (2017, cum laude). Driven by personal tragedy, his passion for science and the desire to contribute to the world led him to apply his understanding of machine learning and computer vision in healthcare, aiming to develop novel assistive technologies for medical doctors that help with early diagnosis and effective treatment of diseases. His research specifically focuses on Computer-Aided Detection and Diagnosis (CADe/CADx) in oncology, striving to increase detection rates for early diagnosis of cancer and thereby vastly increasing survival chances for patients. To achieve this goal, he works closely with medical specialists in an interdisciplinary team to translate medical domain knowledge into technical algorithms and vice versa. Fons aims to fight cancer by ensuring that medical specialists have the right 'weapons' for diagnosis and treatment.
