Biography

Fotini Katopodes Chow holds the Fred & Claire Sauer Chancellor's Chair in Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on numerical modeling of the atmospheric boundary layer, improving predictions for wildfire smoke transport, urban dispersion, and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as exploring wind energy applications. Chow's work includes developing analytical and computational methods to quantify strategies for climate change mitigation and examining air quality effects and cloud representation feedback within regional climate models. She is also involved in studies related to wind turbine interactions with boundary layer dynamics in steep terrain and has worked on urban dispersion modeling. These efforts contribute to improved numerical turbulence techniques and enhanced topography representation in modeling frameworks. She has received prestigious awards, including a National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).
