Biography

Franca Cortoni completed her Ph.D. in forensic and clinical psychology at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She specializes in issues surrounding criminal violence, particularly sexual aggression. Her professional activities include risk assessment, treatment, and correctional management of sexual and violent offenders. Dr. Cortoni worked for 15 years with the Correctional Service of Canada as a psychologist, treatment program manager for sexual aggressors, and research director on the effectiveness of correctional therapeutic programs. She also worked for two years as a consultant within the New South Wales Correctional Service in Sydney, Australia for the development and implementation of their treatment program for sexual offenders. Since 2007, she has been a professor at the School of Criminology at the University of Montreal and a regular researcher at the International Centre for Comparative Criminology (CICC), where she is also a member of the scientific committee and responsible for the clinical intervention scientific theme. She is regularly invited as a consultant and trainer on the assessment, treatment, and management of sexual and violent offenders across Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Franca Cortoni is the author of sixty publications and ninety scientific presentations, including two co-edited books on the theoretical foundations, assessment, and treatment of female sexual offenders and a treatise on criminal violence.
