Biography

Franca Fraternali received her PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Naples and conducted part of her PhD at the ETH, Polytechnic Zurich. After gaining post-doctoral experience at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, she became a staff scientist in the Mathematical Biology Division at the National Institute for Medical Research in London in the year 2000. In 2012, she was awarded the Chair of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. Her research group develops computational methods and tools for large-scale data analysis in Structural Biology, focusing on proteins and nucleic acids. Key areas of expertise include Systems Biology, Molecular Dynamics of folded and misfolded proteins, and Statistical Analysis of Protein Interaction Networks. In November 2022, Franca took on the position of Director of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology, a joint institute with University College London (UCL) and Birkbeck College. She is also the Chair of the Division of Biosciences at UCL.
