Biography

Frances Chung is a professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University Health Network, University of Toronto. She holds the ResMed Research Chair in Anesthesia, Sleep, and Perioperative Medicine. Dr. Chung is a co-founder and past president of the Society of Anesthesia Sleep Medicine. She has been awarded the 2022 Research.com Female Scientist Award and is recognized as a leading scientist in her field with a significant number of publications and citations. Her research interests include cognitive impairment, sleep apnea, pain, patient safety, monitoring, perioperative medicine, and ambulatory anesthesia. Notably, she led the development of the Post Anesthesia Discharge Score (PADS), which is now used worldwide for the safe discharge of patients from ambulatory surgical units. Also, she developed the STOP-Bang questionnaire, a widely acknowledged screening tool for undiagnosed obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Chung has lectured extensively at national and international meetings, garnering multiple awards for her contributions to the field of anesthesiology.
