Biography

Frances Renata Pick is a Full Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Ottawa. Her research program focuses on aquatic ecosystems, including lakes, rivers, wetlands, and urban ponds, which provide essential services to people but are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic stressors such as pollution, land use changes, the spread of invasive species, and climate change. Specifically, her work examines the effects of nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, on algal blooms and the resultant toxins that can negatively impact both human and ecosystem health. With a strong academic background in Biology from Trent University and a PhD in Botany from the University of Toronto, she is also involved in cross/joint appointments within the Faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa.
