Biography

Francesca Cordeiro is a clinician scientist and professor at University College London, leading the Glaucoma Retinal Neurodegeneration Research Group at the Institute of Ophthalmology. She is an honorary glaucoma consultant ophthalmologist at the Western Eye Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, and serves as the director of the Clinical Trials Research Unit. With a medical degree from St Bartholomew’s Hospital, she completed her general and surgical ophthalmology training at Moorfields Eye and St Thomas’ Hospitals. Her PhD from UCL, completed in 1998, focused on the molecular mechanisms behind retinal neurodegenerative diseases, particularly glaucoma and Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Cordeiro's research aims to establish new diagnostic methods for early disease detection, identify early markers of neurodegenerative processes, and investigate new therapeutic approaches. She has received multiple accolades, such as the Research to Prevent Blindness International Research Scholar Award in 2014 and has been recognized by various prestigious organizations for her contributions. Cordeiro also participates in international committees related to glaucoma and neurodegenerative diseases and is actively involved in educating postgraduate students at UCL.
