Dr. Francesca Hughes

Biography

Francesca Hughes is a prominent architect and educator known for her work in architectural history and feminist critical theory. She began her teaching career in the mid-nineties at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, and subsequently taught at the Architectural Association from 2002. Hughes has held esteemed positions, including Professor of Architecture and Head of the School of UTS in Sydney from 2018 to 2021, and has served as an external examiner at various institutions globally. Her research interests are rooted in feminist perspectives on architecture, emphasizing the intersection of architecture with science and technology. Hughes's publications include 'Architect: Reconstructing Practice' (MIT Press, 1996), 'Drawings Count' (AA Publications, 2013), and 'Architecture Error: Matter, Measure Misadventures Precision' (MIT Press, 2014). She explores themes of error and failure in systems, as well as the epistemological entanglements within architectural history. Through collaborations with historians, artists, and other professionals, she has contributed to numerous projects, including award-winning exhibitions and films. Her work is published widely in respected architecture journals and books, advocating for a deeper understanding of architectural practice and theory.
