Biography

Francesco Berna is currently involved in excavation fieldwork at Early Stone Age sites such as Wonderwerk Cave and Bestwood Farm in Northern Cape Province, South Africa, as well as the Middle Paleolithic site Manot Cave in Western Galilee and the Final Pre-Pottery Neolithic site Beisamoun in the Upper Jordan Valley. In addition, he is an expert geoarchaeologist specializing in Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy applied to archaeological investigations. His research has contributed significantly to important issues in Old and New World Archaeology, including the origin of modern behavior, the controlled use of fire during the Lower and Middle Paleolithic periods in South Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, and the dating of the earliest out-of-Africa evidence of Homo erectus at Dmanisi, the earliest North American occupation in Oregon, and the study of domestic industrial pyrotechnological activities at Maya, Roman, Egyptian, and Iron Bronze Age Neolithic sites. Berna also focuses on the reconstruction of site formation processes at historical sites in New England.
