Dr. Francesco Casetti

Biography

Francesco Casetti is a Sterling Professor at Yale University, specializing in Film and Media Studies. He teaches seminars that explore the intersection of media and space and how these elements create meaning. Over the years, Casetti has authored six books that have been translated into multiple languages, including French, Spanish, Czech, and Korean. His research in the 1970s and 1980s primarily focused on the semiotics of film and television, particularly regarding genres, intertextuality, and enunciation. His major contributions include an extensive study on the implied spectator in film, detailed in his work 'Inside Gaze.' During the 1990s, he adopted an original approach that combined close analysis with ethnographic research of actual audiences. His recent studies analyze media anxieties and their impact since the 18th Century. Casetti has taught at several international institutions, including the University of Genova, and has held visiting professorships at prominent universities such as Harvard and the University of Iowa. He has also received various accolades, including being a distinguished scholar at the University of California, Berkeley.
