Francesco qualified with a DMD honour's degree from the University of Naples in 1997. He attended numerous post-graduate training courses in periodontology in Italy and Sweden, completing a specialty program (MClinDent) at University College London in 2008. His research career began with a Clinical Research Fellowship from the Italian Society of Periodontology in 2000, which was followed by a PhD in clinical periodontology. He has received several awards including the AAP Clinical Research Award in 2005, the Antony Rizzo Young Investigator Award in 2009, and the Innovators Diabetes Award from Diabetes UK in 2012. He was appointed Professor of Periodontology and Head of the Periodontology Unit at UCL in 2017. His research focuses on the association between periodontal diseases and systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, and on identifying novel treatments for periodontitis through both non-surgical and surgical means. His clinical focus includes managing periodontitis, utilizing both non-surgical and surgical techniques, soft and hard tissue regenerative therapies, and advanced management of dental implant placement including addressing treatment complications.
