Biography

Francesco Sovrano is a computer scientist and data science researcher focused on explainability and responsible AI. He earned his PhD in Data Science and Computation in 2023 from the University of Bologna, in association with the Polytechnic University of Milan. His work is dedicated to developing computational theories for explanations, applications for user interfaces, regulatory compliance, and reinforcement learning. Currently, he is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Italian-speaking Switzerland (USI), collaborating on an InnoSuisse project for the detection of financial crime using explainable AI (XAI) in partnership with Deloitte AG. His research aims to identify and mitigate cognitive and statistical biases in human-AI interaction, contributing to the advancement of transparent, ethical, and trustworthy AI. Moreover, his work highlights the philosophical, human, and algorithmic dimensions of explanation in XAI and its applications across software engineering, law, knowledge discovery, debugging, and compliance. In addition to his primary research, he engages with interdisciplinary topics such as AI education, human-computer interaction, natural language processing, and reinforcement learning.
