Professor Hughes retired but maintains links with the faculty. His research interests focus mainly on the biology of periodontal regeneration, systemic genetic risk factors for periodontal disease, and periodontal biomarkers. He continues to study in these areas and teaches a research methodologies course to Masters Students, contributing to numerous educational programmes within the faculty. Over his career, Professor Hughes has contributed to postgraduate specialist level training in Periodontology to around 100 students globally. He has supervised a total of 23 PhD students to successful completion of their theses. He has held several prestigious roles, including Chair of the Annual Session Committee for the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) from 2018-2019 and was an EFP-nominated delegate for the 2017 World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal Diseases. Additionally, he served as Chair for EuroPerio 8 in London in 2015 and was President of the British Society of Periodontology from 2009-2010. His research contributions have enhanced knowledge in both clinical and biological aspects of periodontology.
