Dr. Francis Sutherland

Biography

Dr. Sutherland graduated from the University of Calgary Medical School and completed his General Surgery Residency in Calgary. He then went to the University of Western Ontario to complete a Fellowship in Transplantation under the mentorship of Dr. Bill Wall. Upon returning to Calgary, he initially became involved in the Organ Transplant Program, with a surgical career focusing primarily on Hepatobiliary Surgery. Dr. Sutherland took a year sabbatical to work under Professor Bernard Launois at the University of Rennes in France. Since joining the faculty in 1990, he has been an integral member of the Hepatobiliary Multidisciplinary Clinic at Tom Baker Cancer Centre. His clinical practice and research interests have evolved over the years, particularly studying hepatobiliary anatomy and making significant observations in the field. He has also researched methods to minimize blood loss during major hepatic resections and has shown interest in pancreatic cysts.
