Dr. Francis Vanek

Biography

Francis M. Vanek is a Senior Lecturer in the Engineering Management Program at Cornell University. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies and Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in 1991, followed by a Master of Science in Systems Engineering and a Ph.D. in Systems Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1995 and 1998, respectively. Vanek has worked at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland from 1998 to 2001 before returning to Cornell Engineering, where he has been faculty since 2001. His research interests focus on energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, freight transportation systems, and the feasibility of alternative energy systems. He emphasizes the integration of transportation with energy supply and renewable energy systems. Additionally, his teaching interests cover transportation systems, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable practices such as green building and small-scale solar energy projects. Vanek is actively involved in outreach efforts, working with local schools and community organizations to promote sustainable energy solutions and support renewable energy development, particularly in Ithaca and Nicaragua. He has also served on various committees to enhance sustainable practices on campus.
