Francisca Martinez-Hergueta is a Reader in the School of Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. Her research interests lie in the development of composite materials and lightweight structures that aim to reduce the carbon footprint in transport industries, including aerospace and automotive sectors. She focuses on digital design methods and accelerated development of composite products, greatly enhancing their impact performance. Martinez-Hergueta employs a strategy based on a coupled multiscale experimental and numerical approach to assess the role of microstructure in catastrophic failure of components. Her work integrates multiscale numerical techniques for design purposes, enabling the tailoring of microstructural features like fibre orientation and volume to improve ductility and strength. She earned her PhD from the Technical University of Madrid in 2016 and has a Master’s degree from University Carlos III in Madrid (2011), as well as a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Castilla - La Mancha (2008).
