Biography

Francisco J. Naya is an Associate Professor at Boston University in the Department of Biology. He obtained his PhD from Baylor College of Medicine and holds a BA from Boston University. His research focuses on gene regulatory networks in muscle development and disease, particularly in understanding molecular mechanisms that drive pathological gene expression in cardiac and skeletal muscle diseases. His lab employs a systems-level approach to dissect the intricate functions of mammalian MEF2 transcription factors, which are essential regulators of muscle gene programs. Naya's work has led to significant findings regarding the Dlk1-Dio3 noncoding RNA locus, which encodes various long noncoding RNAs and microRNAs involved in skeletal muscle differentiation and regeneration. These findings are crucial for identifying the transcription factor-noncoding RNA regulatory networks that function in muscle, ultimately aimed at developing novel treatments for cardiac and skeletal myopathies. He serves as the Director of Graduate Studies for the Cell Molecular Biology Program and is a member of the Genome Science Institute at Boston Medical Center.
