Biography

Francisco Panizza is a prominent scholar in Latin American Comparative Politics. He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and studied law before pursuing an MA and PhD in Politics from the University of Essex. He began his career as a researcher with the Research Department of the International Secretariat of Amnesty International in 1991. In 1995, he joined the Department of Government at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where he has since contributed significantly to the academic discourse on democracy and human rights in Latin America. He is also a co-editor of the Routledge Series on Conceptualizing Comparative Politics. His research interests include Democracy, Human Rights, Latin American Politics, the Economy of MERCOSUR countries, Populism, and the dynamics of left and center governments during financial crises from a comparative perspective. Panizza teaches various courses at LSE, including those focusing on democracy, power politics, and political institutions in the context of Latin America.
