Biography

Francisco Peñagaricano is an Associate Professor and the Judge John J. Crown Chair in Dairy Genetics at the University of Wisconsin. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology Biochemistry in 2005 and a Master’s degree in Animal Science in 2010 from Universidad de la República, Uruguay. He continued his graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, completing his Master’s in Statistics in 2014, followed by a Ph.D. in Animal Science later that same year. Before joining the faculty at the University of Wisconsin in 2020, he was a faculty member in the Department of Animal Sciences at the University of Florida from 2015 to 2020. His research interests lie in quantitative genomics and computational biology, focusing on the development and application of methods to dissect the genetic architecture of economically relevant traits in livestock. His work integrates large, nationwide phenotypic datasets with field experiments, high-throughput genomic technologies, and advanced statistical computational methods to elucidate the connection between the genome and phenotype. His research includes gene mapping, gene-set analysis, genomic prediction, methylome and transcriptome analysis, multi-omics data integration, and network modeling.
