Biography

François-Joseph Lapointe leads the Laboratory of Molecular Ecology and Evolution at the Université de Montréal. He is a full professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. His research interests encompass phylogenetics, systematics, metagenomics, and population genetics. He has authored over a hundred publications in evolutionary biology and has developed several statistical tests and algorithms in bioinformatics. Lapointe completed his Ph.D. in Arts Studies at the Université du Québec à Montréal in 2012, under the supervision of Martine Époque, focusing on choreogenetics, wherein he generated genetic algorithms for creating silico choreographies. His artistic practice draws inspiration from molecular biology models. Currently, he is sequenced his microbiome for generating metagenomic self-portraits. His work has been funded by various organizations including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
