François Cavayas obtained his Engineer's degree in surveying from the National Technical University of Athens (Greece) in 1976, followed by an M.Sc. in Photogrammetry in 1979 and a Ph.D. in Geodetic Sciences and Remote Sensing in 1984 from Laval University (Quebec). He served as a postdoctoral researcher at the Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing from 1984 to 1985, after which he joined the Department of Geography in 1985. In 1986, he co-founded the Remote Sensing Laboratory with his colleague, Professor James Gray. His research contributions focus on the use of remote sensing technologies for urban land use mapping, environmental monitoring, and the characterization of urban surfaces using high-resolution satellite imagery. He has led multiple funded research projects, including investigations into urban health determinants leveraging earth observation data, and has published extensively in the field of remote sensing and geospatial analysis.
