Dr. François De Médicis

Biography

François de Médicis is a professor of musicology at the Faculty of Music at the University of Montreal, where he has been teaching since 1998, the year he obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical musicology from McGill University. Since November 2022, he has served on the scientific committee of the Italian Institute of Applied Musicology and is part of the editorial committee for the critical edition of the works of Camille Saint-Saëns published by Bärenreiter. He has authored a monograph titled 'La maturation artistique de Debussy dans son contexte historique (1884-1902)' and has co-edited several significant volumes focusing on music in France during the modern era. De Médicis has published articles in international journals including Acta Musicologica and Music & Letters, covering French and Russian composers from both the 19th and 20th centuries. He has been an influential voice in music analysis, participating in various international conferences and serving as the francophone editor for the journal Intersections. His research interests focus primarily on French and Russian music from the 20th century, including significant composers like Debussy and Milhaud. He has also given keynote addresses at prestigious institutions, and he engages with a broad audience through interviews and notes for musical programs.
