Biography

François-Hugues Leclair is a renowned composer and professor specializing in instrumental writing and composition. His teaching focuses on the analysis of 20th-century works, counterpoint, orchestration, and modern composition techniques. His compositional work revolves around two essential axes: the exploration of interactions between ancient music and contemporary musical languages, as well as the creation of relationships between literature and music. This dual focus is reflected in his numerous choral works and instrumental compositions, often inspired by esteemed poets and writers from various languages. Leclair began his studies with Serge Garant at the Université de Montréal and later pursued his education at the Strasbourg Conservatory and the La Courneuve Conservatory in France. He completed his Doctorate in composition under Michel Longtin at the Université de Montréal and has held various academic positions since 2002, moving from invited professor to assistant professor and then to associate professor in 2014.
