François Meurens obtained his veterinary medicine degree in 2000 from the Catholic University of Louvain & University of Liège in Belgium. He completed a master's degree in veterinary sciences in 2001 and a Ph.D. in veterinary sciences in 2004 at the University of Liège. He underwent postdoctoral training at the University of Saskatchewan from 2005 to 2007 and held a 'scientist level 3' position at VIDO-InterVac from 2012 to 2015. Since 2015, he has been a professor of immunology and microbiology (virology) at the National Veterinary School, Food and Agriculture of Nantes-Atlantique in France and served as the director of the Immunocare team at the INRAE research unit in Nantes. His career started with the study of genetic recombination in ruminant alpha herpes viruses, and later shifted focus to swine hosts regarding various pathogenic agents affecting both swine and humans, including pathogens causing respiratory issues and gastrointestinal diseases in swine. His research aims to better treat animals and minimize the use of antimicrobials.
