Biography

François Proulx is an Associate Professor in the Department of French and Italian at the University of Illinois, where his research primarily focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century French literature, critical theory, and visual studies. His current investigations delve into the works of Marcel Proust, particularly his use of private codes and allusions found in manuscripts, letters, and drawings. Proulx has published notable works including a comprehensive inventory of Proust's drawings, and his scholarship has appeared in prestigious publications such as the Bulletin d'informations proustiennes and Modern Language Notes. He co-edited a special issue titled 'Proust Ends' for L'Esprit Créateur, coinciding with the centenary of Proust’s death. His book, Victims Book: Reading Masculinity in Fin-de-Siècle France, critically investigates the cultural context of national decline and educational reform through the lens of adolescent male readers in late-nineteenth-century France. In recognition of his contributions to the field, Proulx has received several awards, including a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes académiques and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship. Additionally, he serves as an Associate Editor for Nineteenth-Century French Studies and is affiliated with the ITEM research team in Paris, focusing on modern texts and manuscripts.
