Biography

Frank Biermann is a research professor in Global Sustainability Governance at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University, Netherlands. He is an internationally leading scholar in global institutions and organizations within the sustainability domain. Biermann founded the Earth System Governance network and pioneered the ‘earth system’ governance paradigm in global change research in 2005. As the founder and chair of the Earth System Governance Project from 2008 to 2018, he leads a transdisciplinary research network of 600 sustainability scholars. He completed a €2.5 million research programme that steers the effects of the Sustainable Development Goals, funded by the prestigious European Research Council Advanced Grant. His research focuses on developing new theory in planetary politics, and he initiated the independent International Panel on Earth System Governance to explore political strategies for a global ban on solar geoengineering technologies. With over 200 publications, including books and peer-reviewed journal articles, his work has garnered over 31,000 citations, highlighting his broad influence in the field. Recently, he received the prestigious Volvo Environment Prize for defining new pathways in international environmental governance, among various other accolades throughout his career.
