Biography

Frank Biess is a historian specializing in modern European history, with a particular emphasis on 20th Century Germany. He began his academic training at universities in Marburg and Tübingen, Germany, and became an exchange student at Washington University in St. Louis in 1991. He completed his graduate studies at Brown University, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2000. His research has primarily focused on the post-1945 period, with notable works such as 'Homecoming: Returning POWs and the Legacies of Defeat in Postwar Germany' (Princeton, 2006), which examines how German societies coped with the legacies of war defeat, particularly through the lens of the return of German POWs from East and West Germany. His current research interests include the history of emotions in postwar West Germany, exploring the recurring cycles of political fears and the impact of insecurity on contemporary German society. Biess is also investigating German colonialism and its implications for the Weimar Republic.
